Jumpoff/Shoreline Trail - First Ever RMB Video!

So this is my first ever video on this blog - short, a little bumpy, you might want to lose your lunch after watching it bounce around (I was videoing as I rode with one hand, phone in the other), but its a start - hopefully the start of many other good videos on this blog.

A few other photos also from our ride on the Shoreline Trail from the Jumpoff trailhead to 12th Street.

Flat tire interruptions of the Skyline

I went for a quick morning ride this particular Saturday about four miles up the Northern Skyline trail in Ogden.  I love this ride - great climbs, good downhill, awesome views.  I ended up going to the top of the switchbacks, rode along the eastern side, and then ended up turning around after the switchback to where it pops out on the western side overlooking North Ogden.
Going up a particularly technical switchback
On the ride down, about a mile or less into the downhill, a family passed me hiking.  As the father was passing he pointed out that I had a flat - an observation I had not yet noticed actually.  Turns out that my valve stem, which had kind of broken on my previous ride, had started leaking air.  I didn't have a spare tube on me, and nothing I could do to repair it, so I tried twice to pump it up and keep riding, but eventually gave up and just hauled my bike about three miles down the trail on my shoulder.

Indian Activity Hour Part 2

Toward the top of the Indian Trail
The Rock Wall at the start
I took another work activity hour ride on the Indian Trail.  Got a bit further this time, and once again a great workout.  The funny part was that I had been playing with the suspension fork at work while talking to someone and had locked out my suspension, but totally forgotten about it when I went on the ride.  About half way down I started thinking to myself that it felt like my wheel was taking a bit more of a beating than normal - at that point I realized that my fork had been locked in complete compression and I had no travel anymore!  I guess that is how life is sometimes - we may be taking a beating or making life harder for ourselves than it should be, but if we look at the simple things, suddenly life can get a lot easier.  I feel some of those simple things in my life are prayer, scriptures study, spending time with family, and putting my priorities straight that make my life a lot more smooth of a ride.

Coming down on the Shoreline

Early Shoreline Run

I just ended up taking a quick ride on Shoreline, starting at the Nature Center trailhead and going south.  Fun for a quick morning ride.

Sick ride of North Ogden Shoreline

Directly after a big climb, just before the downhill
We took a quick ride up the steep trail starting at the end of 3500 North, hit Shoreline and rode over to the Divide on this particular Saturday morning.  I had been sick since Tuesday night, and thought I was feeling better, and did for most of the ride.  However, I ended up feeling quite sick the rest of that day and part of Sunday.  I'm guessing the ride prolonged my recovery a bit as I wasn't quite ready for it, but it was fun.

On the ride back my dad ended up getting a hornet that flew into a helmet vent and stung him on the head!  Not fun.

Activity hour, Indian Trail return

Up a ways on the Indian Trail
I used the second work activity hour to ride up the Indian Trail - I don't know quite what I was thinking other than that I wanted a good workout.  The trial, as usual kicked my butt, and even more so because of bent derailleur that caused me some grief climbing.  The trail was super steep and rocky, and was a real lung-buster to climb, but pretty of course with great views and a blast coming down.  I only rode about an hour, but it was a lot of fun.

Women Shower, Men Ride

Climbing up Jumpoff
One of my sisters was having a baby shower, so the men of the family used this time to go for a ride - I hope no one takes offense at my title as this is more descriptive of our family than anything else.  Women will go do some feminine type thing like a baby shower or shopping while the men of the family are generally out riding.  We did the Jumpoff trail to Shoreline and then rode that to 12th Street and back.

Start of the Work Activity Hour

Dropping down a section in the Enchanted Forest
Wreck from an overly fast corner
At work they started a new thing called activity hour - patterned after some successful businesses.  Basically it is that we have a free hour a week to go do some type of physical activity.  Naturally mine was used for biking.  Used in conjunction with my lunch it gives some time for a decent ride.

On this inaugural activity hour I set out to do the Autoliv Trails again.  I didn't do much as I only shot down the Parkway to Riverdale and did the Enchanted Forest section.  It was a blast, rode it hard and fast, had one wreck from taking a corner too fast (resulting in a good long cut on my leg from a thorn bush), and discovered a section we missed last time that was super muddy and not really ridable.

Dropping down this portion you have to watch your head

Autoliv Trails and Weber River Parkway

Ramp up and over a truck on the northern section
I was introduced this past weekend to a set of trails I had never tried before.  If you head west on 30th Street to where it ends up becoming 31st, you can then take a turn south on Parker and go for just about a tenth to a quarter mile where it crosses the river and there is a little parking lot on the south when you pass that - you can start there and ride on the paved Weber River Parkway.  This paved trail connect to the Ogden River Parkway (actually I think it is called the Centennial Trail).

You can then ride along the paved trail clear to Riverdale, with occasional sections of singletrack popping out from the paved section and then eventually reuniting with it.  You'll cross quite a few bridges, and one road in the process.  When you get to Riverdale you'll end up seeing a BMX bike section that's fun to take a quick round on, then it goes into the frisbee golf park.

The trails are actually quite difficult to find, and are somewhere on the eastern end by the railroad tracks.  You then enter into the forest section, which I guess is named "The Enchanted Forest."  This section is quite fun with a lot quick drops and climbs, sharp turns, etc.  Nothing very strenuous, but kind of technical and fun.

You end up popping out into a clearing again, eventually hit a dirt road, which then if you watch carefully you'll find singletrack shooting off on the west again for a quick loop out by the river, in a section called "Nam."

Approaching Nam
On our way back we rode just past the parking lot, under a bridge, and into this southern section that is kind of short, but has quite a few stunts, such as two trucks that have ramps built to climb up and over, a large spool to ride over, some bermed turns, riding through the "V" of a tree, a log bridge, etc.  Its quite a bit of fun as well.

Overall this trail isn't much of a workout, but its a lot of fun for a ride and something quite different from everything else in the Ogden area.
