Ogden Nature Center: Quail Trail

I rode the complete Quail Trail on this particular night. It is only about a half mile in length from one end to the next with lots of trails splitting off in various direction. About halfway through it turns into a small little loop that you can do.

The end of the trail connects to a doubletrack that I believe connects up to the Shoreline Trail (where you can also split off and do Garner Canyon) or you can go another direction and take Powerline Trail, which also connects to the Shoreline Trail. This particular day I took the Powerline Trail which is very narrow, has some good climbing and descent, and isn't too bad of a small trail if you wanted a quick afterwork loop with the Quail Trail that has more climbing.

I ended up turning around and doing the Powerline as an out and back and coming back again on the Quail Trail, which all in all only made for only just over 2 miles, and that included some climbing on that doubletrack.

Flying the Quail to Shoreline

I took another early, early morning ride before work on the Quail Trail (top two pictures). I'm quite pleased to report that this trail does dry out - other than a small creek going through I didn't see any mud. What I don't think I realized was just how many split offs there are all along this trail. It is a fun trail to go along.

What I'm not as pleased to report was that I chickened out of going too far on it and wanted to wait until it was a bit more light to plunge into the dark forest. It didn't look particularly inviting this day, so since it was early, the sun wasn't up yet, I decided I would fly over to the Shoreline trail (bottom two pictures) from there, which as always was pretty fun. Took one side trail there that proved to be a good stiff climb that led to nowhere but a bunch of large rocks sitting on the trail.

Quail Trail

There's not much info I've been able to find online about this trail, but it is part of the Ogden Nature Center, and can be found by a joint parking lot for the Shoreline Trail somewhere between 1100 N and 2100 N in Ogden. I do not believe the trail is terribly long, but the morning I rode it was a quickie before work, and it was pretty muddy so I didn't make it very far.

The trail seems to be fairly flat and kind of goes through a marsh land. The morning I rode it I went straight through a herd of deer (if you look closely you can see them in the first picture) that I scared and heard quite a few birds. It was fairly muddy when I rode it, and I'm not sure if that is a product of the marsh or of it being early April when I rode. Either way it was fun enough to warrant a return trip down the road.

There are quite a few creek crossings with awkward logs to cross on that make it easier to just ride through the creek then get on top of the logs. It was a pretty fun trail with lots of forks to make for some fun exploring down the road. I kind of stuck to the more straight path and I probably got in at least a half mile to a mile out before I turned around. If it dries up in the summer it would be worth a quick ride when I don't have a lot of time.
